Super Eagles Boycott AFCON Qualifier, Demand Nigerian Government’s Intervention After Being Stranded in Libya
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has announced that the Nigerian team has decided not to participate in the 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya, originally set for Tuesday, October 15. The decision comes after the team was stranded for over 15 hours at Al Abraq Airport, without adequate support from the Libyan authorities.
In a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter), Troost-Ekong criticized the Libyan authorities for their handling of the situation and called for the Nigerian government to step in and “rescue” the team. He revealed that, as a collective decision, the Super Eagles have opted not to play the match due to the unsafe and inadequate conditions they’ve faced.
“We have called for our Nigerian Government to intervene and rescue us,” Troost-Ekong stated. He went on to express the team’s concerns about safety, food, and accommodation, adding, “Even if CAF allows this behavior, let them have the points. We will not travel by road here, even with security, it’s not safe.”
Troost-Ekong emphasized that while the Nigerian team treats its guests with respect when they come to play in Nigeria, what the Super Eagles have faced in Libya is unacceptable.
